PORT ELIZABETH 28 May: (Photo: Barry, Cheldene, Dr. Anyikwa, Dr. Spilkin, Prof AO)Barry Kock from Rotary kindly invited Prof AO to give a talk on arrhythmias. Prof AO's very informative talk stressed the importance of knowing how to use an AED!(Automatic External Defibrillator)  There were lots of questions and a certain need for more education.  We look forward to the next meeting on the 25th of July at Greenacres Hospital with the topic " Living with your Device" (pacemaker or ICD) by Danielle Frade from Johannesburg.  Please RSVP  Cheldene Fick at 041 - 4662741 for this "not be missed" talk!

COMRADES 24 April:  Herewith my letter to Peter and Juliet, (Durban Support Group representatives) summarizing the event!
Dear Peter and Juliet,
On behalf of PACE I would just like to thank you, your children, Jason and Che-kelly(and their friends), your parents and everyone else involved (Horst and Yvonne and over 50 volunteers from GBBearing in Durban!), for your incredible effort with the refreshment station during the Comrades Race.

Being there, I almost know just how much hard work it entailed for weeks before already!!  Besides being on your feet for well over  12 hours on Comrades day, Juliet was brilliant with sorting out the massive logistics.  This ranged from  loading up tons of ice, blowing up 100 balloons, stenciling tablecloths, making burgers for lunch, transporting 10 + tables, cleaning the road before and after, organising loo paper, music, whistles, security gaurds, vaseline, 50+ volunteers, truckdrivers, truck, green bags for recycled stuff, black for other........ the list is endless!!
(Calm before the storm of runners!)
As a runner I can say it was a most incredible experience and that everything went so well, a real feather in Juliet and Peter's cap.
It was a great success, especially as the Comrades representative, Alan has already invited PACE for next year!   Maybe, next year, the whole PACE committee must bring 10 volunteer each and join the fun!  We certainly created a lot of awareness and many a runner may remember the hosepipe water that Peter thankfully provided at our 67km station!
Many thanks again and I hope you have all recovered well by now.
Kind regards,
Lusan

On 14 March 2009 Cape Town PACE Support Group had the priviledge of listening to Prof Paul Brink.  He gave us a very interesting overview on arrhythmias, the current situation worldwide and treatment options.  We realised that an demonstration of using an AED (Automatic External Defibrillator) is vital at all meetings and hope to implement that.  Our next meeting will be on 20 June 2009 when Gill Davidson will be running a councelling workshop about effective communication when faced with a challenging health condition. I know it will be very interesting! Be sure to RSVP Yvonne on 021-7012749.

Durban PACE Support Group (eThekwini Hospital) on Friday 13th March 2009.  We were pleased at the turnout for our Support and Information meeting held on Friday, 13th March.
Peter Rogan opened the meeting and first welcomed Peter Graham (from Medtronic), who has agreed to become a counselor in KwaZulu Natal. Peter is a practicing Minister who also has the technical knowledge to assist patients with arrhythmias. We are very pleased that Peter is ‘joining’ PACE.
Our special guest – Dr K O’Connell – then took over and provided all those present with a very entertaining understanding of arrhythmia’s – different types, treatments, causes etc. He was able to answer many questions and everybody really enjoyed the presentation ! He really provided a different insight and his presentation was very well received.
A special thanks to Dr O’Connell for making the time to address our PACE support group !
