Treatment
DrugsDrugs, mostly beta- blockers, are used to stabilize the heart.
Surgery - Catheter ablation (cauterization) is occasionally possible in some rhythm problems.
- Surgical ablation (removal) of the source of the arrhythmia (rhythm problem) is also sometimes possible.
- Electrical cardioversion or defibrillation (shocking of the heart) may be necessary to normalize the heart rhythm.
- Pacemaker implant is an electrical device that maintains a normal heart rate (speed) and may suppress abnormal rhythms.
ICD
ICD (Implantable cardioverter defibrillator) monitors the heartbeat and automatically shocks the heart back into rhythm if necessary.
Heart transplants
Heart transplants are necessary in some cases.
Genetic research is ongoing and vital in finding a cure for many hereditary conditions.
